Fauntleroy Expressway Seismic Retrofit

The Fauntleroy Expressway, an elevated highway built in 1963, spans 2,527 feet and is used by more than 60,000 motorists daily.

The project seismically retrofitted 25 columns of the bridge. The work included strengthening the columns with steel jackets, strengthening the pile caps, replacing bearing pads, and adding longitudinal restraints to interconnect the roadway over each support. These improvements decreased the probability of structural failure in the event of an earthquake.

The replacement of 33 bearing pads involved hydraulically lifting the roadway and required more than 60 full and partial closures of the Expressway. During bridge closures a major detour was established for the driving public.

S&A coordinated construction communications with project area stakeholders and the general public for this project.
